  12.  This disk contains demonstrations of 
  13. adventures   created  using  the   ST 
  14. Adventure  Creator  (  STAC  )   from 
  15. Incentive Software.

  27.            FREE ADVENTURE
  28.  
  29.  Firstly,  there is a full  adventure 
  30. which you can actually  play,  called 
  31. SHYMER. To start this up, move to the 
  32. window   displaying  an  icon   named 
  33. SHYMER.PRG,  click  in the window  to 
  34. activate  it,  then  double-click  on 
  35. SHYMER.PRG.  After a few seconds, the 
  36. title  page  of  the  adventure  will 
  37. appear, and you can start playing the 
  38. game.

  43.   Secondly,  there is a slideshow  of 
  44. pictures that have been created using 
  45. the STAC. This is started by clicking 
  46. on the window containing STACDEMO.PRG 
  47. and then double-clicking on the icon. 
  48. To  start the slideshow,  go  to  the 
  49. SLIDES   menu,   and   select   "Show 
  50. compressed".  The slideshow will then 
  51. run  automatically,  displaying  each 
  52. picture   in  turn.   To   stop   the 
  53. slideshow,  press Cntrl-C ( press and 
  54. hold the Control key, and press C ).
  55.  
  56.   If you are likely to be  displaying 
  57. the slideshow for a long time ( maybe 
  58. as a window display in a shop ), then 
  59. select  "RAM compressed"  instead  of 
  60. "Show compressed".  What this does is 
  61. load all the compressed pictures into 
  62. memory,  displaying  them as it  does 
  63. so,   then  continues  the  slideshow 
  64. without  accessing the disk  at  all. 
  65. This saves wear and tear on the  disk 
  66. drives  which would otherwise  be  in 
  67. constant operation.
  68.  
  69.   The timing between pictures can  be 
  70. altered  using the "Time"  menu.  The 
  71. default time is 10 seconds,  but this 
  72. can  be taken up as far as a  minute, 
  73. and down to no delay ( ie as fast  as 
  74. the pictures can be loaded from  disk 
  75. and   decompressed  ).   On   a   RAM 
  76. slideshow,  the  pictures  are  first 
  77. loaded  as  fast  as  possible,  then 
  78. displayed at the correct speed.

  80.  To pause between pictures until  you 
  81. press a key,  go to the OPTIONS menu, 
  82. and  select  "Pause" (  A  tick  will 
  83. appear  next  to  it  if  the   pause 
  84. facility is switched on already ). To 
  85. turn  this  off,  do the  same  thing 
  86. again.

  88.   The slideshow program also has  the 
  89. ability  to compress  and  decompress 
  90. pictures  saved to disk in  NEOCHROME 
  91. format,  in  order to save  space  on 
  92. your  disks.  It will also act  as  a 
  93. NEOCHROME slideshow.

  95.  To compress NEOCHROME slides ( which 
  96. will  have  names ending in  .NEO  ), 
  97. load  the slide in using "Load  .NEO" 
  98. from  the FILE menu,  and choose  the 
  99. picture  you want to load  using  the 
  100. file selector box that  appears.  The 
  101. picture  will then be loaded  in  and 
  102. displayed.  You can then save this as 
  103. a  compressed  picture  by  selecting 
  104. "Save compressed" from the file menu. 
  105. Again, the file selector will appear, 
  106. allowing you to choose a name for the 
  107. compressed slide. The default name is 
  108. the same as the original picture, but 
  109. ending  in  .CMP ( for  compressed  ) 
  110. rather  than  .NEO.   After  the  few 
  111. seconds  taken to compress  the  pic-
  112. ture, the new compressed picture will 
  113. be saved on to the disk.

  115.   To decompress a  picture,  use  the 
  116. reverse    process   (    ie    "Load 
  117. compressed" then "Save .NEO"  ).  You 
  118. will  need to do this if you  have  a 
  119. compressed  picture that you wish  to 
  120. edit  -  NEOCHROME cannot  cope  with 
  121. compressed slides directly.  You will 
  122. also  need to do this if you want  to 
  123. import  parts of the compressed  demo 
  124. pictures into the STAC.

  126.  There is one more option not covered 
  127. yet  - the "Show info" option on  the 
  128. OPTIONS  menu.  When this is  active, 
  129. then  the  length of  the  compressed 
  130. picture is displayed before saving.
